The United Arab Emirates marked a significant cultural milestone as the Guest of Honour at the 32nd edition of the Beijing International Book Fair (BIBF) 2026, reaffirming its growing role as a global hub for cultural exchange, publishing, and international dialogue.

Held in Beijing on 16 June 2026, the opening ceremony brought together prominent officials, cultural leaders, publishers, and literary figures from both countries to celebrate the enduring partnership between the UAE and China and the transformative power of books in connecting people across cultures.

The UAE delegation was led by Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qasimi, accompanied by Hussain bin Ibrahim Al Hammadi and Mubarak Al Nakhi. Their participation highlighted the country's commitment to strengthening cultural diplomacy and expanding cooperation with international partners.

The Beijing International Book Fair, one of the world's largest publishing events, serves as a platform for publishers, authors, translators, and cultural institutions to exchange ideas, showcase literary achievements, and explore new opportunities for collaboration. The UAE's designation as Guest of Honour underscores the international recognition of its vibrant cultural landscape and its continued investment in literature, translation, and knowledge exchange.

A highlight of the opening ceremony was the recognition of Emirati cultural figure and academic Dr. Mohammed Mousa Al Huwaidin, who received the prestigious China Special Book Award in its nineteenth edition. The award honours individuals who have made exceptional contributions to promoting cultural understanding and strengthening literary and intellectual ties between China and the wider world.

This recognition reflects the deepening cultural relationship between the UAE and China, a partnership that extends beyond trade and economic cooperation to encompass education, heritage preservation, translation initiatives, and creative industries.

Over the years, the UAE has positioned culture as a cornerstone of its development strategy, supporting initiatives that foster reading, empower creative communities, and encourage cross-cultural dialogue. Participation in international events such as the Beijing International Book Fair demonstrates the country's vision of culture as a bridge between nations and a catalyst for mutual understanding.

As visitors from around the world gather in Beijing, the UAE's presence offers an opportunity to showcase the richness of Emirati literature, heritage, and contemporary creativity while opening new avenues for collaboration between Arab and Chinese publishers, writers, and cultural institutions.

The UAE's participation at BIBF 2026 is more than a ceremonial honour—it is a testament to the country's dedication to building meaningful cultural connections and promoting the universal language of books.
