The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced the inclusion of the late Emirati poet Ahmed bin Sulayem in its special commemorative programme for the celebration of anniversaries for the years 2026–2027. This significant recognition places one of the UAE’s most influential Nabati poets on an international platform dedicated to celebrating cultural figures who have shaped artistic and intellectual heritage.

Marking 50 Years Since His Passing

UNESCO’s recognition coincides with the 50th anniversary of Ahmed bin Sulayem’s passing, offering a timely tribute to a poet whose work remains deeply rooted in the cultural memory of the UAE. As one of the country’s most remarkable Nabati poets, Ahmed bin Sulayem played a key role in shaping the Emirati oral and literary tradition. His poems have long been valued for their expressive depth, cultural authenticity, and their ability to capture the spirit and identity of local communities.

Celebrating Cultural Values in Line With UNESCO’s Mission

The decision to include Ahmed bin Sulayem in the anniversary programme highlights UNESCO’s commitment to promoting cultural values that align with its global principles. His poetry—characterized by its eloquence, wisdom, and preservation of Nabati heritage—reflects the cultural richness of the UAE and contributes to the broader tapestry of Arab literary history.

Through this honour, UNESCO recognizes not only an individual poet but also the cultural traditions he helped preserve. Nabati poetry, long regarded as the voice of the desert and the people, forms an essential part of Gulf heritage. Ahmed bin Sulayem’s role in advancing this tradition makes him a fitting figure for international commemoration.

A Lasting Legacy

UNESCO’s listing stands as a tribute to Ahmed bin Sulayem’s enduring influence and his contributions to cultural life in the UAE. As the country continues to promote and safeguard its cultural identity, this recognition reinforces the importance of poets, storytellers, and artists whose work transcends generations.
